Question
Hi, there.

I would like to find out the translation of the question, "Hur ska ni ha det?" I
encountered this phrase in my Swedish textbook but cannot find a definition
in either my Swedish dictionaries or online.

Also, can anyone tell me the difference between "ju" and "väl"? I see them all
the time in Swedish sentences and have a reasonably good idea what they
mean, but I'm not sure when to use each one.

Thanks.

Answer
Hi Richard!

I just sent you an email with the answer to your first question.

The difference between "ju" and "väl" can be quite subtle, but as a main rule it's like this: When you're certain and try to convince someone you use "ju", and when you're uncertain or asking, you use "väl". Unfortonately, in some occasions they can be interchangeable...

An example:

Q: Var är boken du lånade av mig?

A 1: Den fick du ju tillbaka! (You are certain that you gave it back)

A 2: Den fick du väl tillbaka? (You think you gave it back, but you're not certain about it)

Regards,
Karin
