Question Hi, I'm doing a report on how math and diving are involved together. I was wondering if you can tell me things about diving that relate to math. For example, do divers have to form a shape with their hands when diving? Anything related to math and diving will help me, thank you.
Answer Gabriel--
Diving and math are related when it comes to geometry. Angles leaving the board and how they relate to the angles entering the water. The angle leaving the board is usually the same as the initial entry angle. Center of gravity changes, and spin rate changes with the different positions: tuck(fast spin), pike(medium spin) and layout(slow spin) positions.
The only specific thing divers do with their hands when diving is to try to get them flat, palms facing the water, on entry. This makes a good hole in the water to help create the splashless entry on a near perfect dive. This is the best I can offer, but check into books by Sammy Lee or Dick O'Brien. You might find more there, they are about the best in the sport and should be more help.
