Subject: pump and motor

Question
Hi.  We have a motor that is 25 years old and a pump we can't find records on. We live in So. Calif.  They seem to be humming along as usual. Do they weaken over time? Out pool guy wants to replace them.     Thanks,  -Jim S.

Answer
James...

Without question... I would replace the entire unit given its age.  First...and most importantly... newer designs are more energy efficient.  It is possible you can get a pump with less HP that pushes more water.  Second.... a pump works best with OEM (original equipment manufacturer) parts.  Third... it is possible that certain parts will be hard to find. There is nothing worse than spending money to repair it and then later...find out that they no longer make a specific part. It does take a little more work to plumb in a new pump than replace the motor but in my opinion it is worth it.

Take a look at the Pac Fab Whisperflow Pump. It is very quiet... and very energy efficient. Personally.. I think Hayward is junk but it is sold by a lot of pool companies b/c it is cheaper.

Good luck,
Craig
