Subject: inground vacuum

Question
I manually vacuum my inground pool - hook up vacuum to skimmer, turn valve on pump, vacuum, etc.  Once I'm done, I turn pump off, remove vacuum from skimmer, and backwash.  When I turn the pump back to "filter" the circulation starts up but dirty water shoots out of the jets back into the pool.  What am I doing wrong?  I just read one of your answers - Vacuum to waste means by-passing the filter. Not putting all yuck in the filter but on the ground or sewer. Can I/should I be doing this?  Your statement "Make sure you clean and rinse filter after vacuuming," - does this apply to a sand filter for inground pool?  Thank you so much.

Answer
Sure this is for a sand filter. If the debris is algae or some other  yuck rather than normal dirt I vac to waste.Only problem with vac to waste is you loose water. When you say hook up vac to skimmer, turn valve, turn valve to what?Is this when your vac to waste?I think you might have a bad spider gasket in the valve control.Lynn
