Subject: Debris in pool when first opened for the season

Question
Please help me troubleshoot a problem.  Every year the pool is full of debris and dirt when we take the cover off.  Every year my husband spends a good week+ vacuuming it out rather than pay a pool maintenance company to come in with a motor vacuum.  The cover fits though it does have some, not a lot, of tears.  Though leaves may be coming in through the tears, the dirt must be running off the slate surround.  Should we invest in a new cover or should we expect to find debris when the pool is opened?  Would a new cover fit tightly enough to prevent dirt run off from the yard and slate surround? I don't have a muddy, dirty surround at the end of each winter so I know I don't have a run off or drainage problem.  Is it possible the cover sits too high off the pool?  It doesn't to the naked eye. Maybe the problem lies with the metal "pins" with which we secure the cover?  Our neighbors next door never have this problem, lucky them.  They open, wait for the chemicals to clear, and swim.  My poor husband struggles.  Thank you.

Answer
You talk about 'pins' I guess you have a mesh cover.I don't like them I prefer a vinyl cover with 6&8 foot pillows.Covers need to sit flush on the ground to prevent debris from getting underneath. You should have to spend no more than 5 or 6  hour reading a pool for summer if it was put away correctly.Lynn
