Subject: Dirty water begins to be pumped back into the pool

Question
I have a Haywood sand filter, and a 27ft above ground pool.. I am having a hard time getting my pool to stop being cloudy.  I have shocked the pool and when I vacum after about 20 seconds the dirty water begins to be pumped back into the pool. Am I not using the filter correctly when vacuming or is something wrong with the filter. I am vacuming on the normal filtraction setting???
Thanks

Answer
I would change the sand and look at the laterals[plastic tubes]and standpipe. You should use normal filter for vacuuming unless their is heavy algae or undesirable debris not wanting to go in filter then use 'vac to waste'.If you have trouble with cloudy water try this.At sundown double shock the pool, put all vac equipment in pool, run filter for 3 hours, shut off filter vac in the morning.Add flocculent if necessary. If you change sand or backwash.Backwash for approximately 2 minutes, rinse for 30 seconds.Lynn
