Subject: Low Filter Pressure

Question
QUESTION: I have a 12,000 gal. pool with a sand filter and a 1hp pump. My pump pressure for the past two summers has been about 20lbs. About two days ago my pressure droped to about 13lbs. My water bubblers barely go up 3ft., they used to go all the way across the pool. Everything seems to be running normal, can you explain my pressure drop?

ANSWER: When did you change sand last?Possible causes,vari-control valve leaking to by-pass,blockage cleared in filter.LYNN

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: I have never changed the sand. When should I do this and how do I know how much sand is needed? The vari-control valve was taken apart and inspected. Ther is no water leaking out of the valve to the drain.

Answer
At 20 pounds I would suspect a blockage,!3 to 18 when dirty seems normal.Bad or sticking gauge[most gauges you buy at 5 dollars are the most accurate or durable. At 13 pounds you should have more output then at 20.This is measuring filter resistance I'm sure you know.Their could have been partial blockage in the filter that cleared.Possible pump impeller damage or slippage.Lynn
