Subject: Pump Shuts off when backwashing

Question
QUESTION: When backwashing, my hayward pump shuts off shortly after I start the backwash.  We don't know if it's triping the inside switch.

ANSWER: What makes it come back on?How long does it stay off?Does it ever shut down any other time?Lynn

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: I have to turn power off for at least 20 min before it will come back on.  Only backwashing makes it shut off & when I'm doing this, it smells like something is hot. And only after about a minute.

ANSWER: The overload [thermal] is shutting you off.Something is putting extra stress on the motor when backwashing. Are you sure theirs nothing plugged on your back wash hose or pipe.Is water flowing out at high speed?I can't think of anything else that would load the motor only at backwashing.Lynn

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: Water flows out fine, but I can definetly smell something hot.  Guess we will call someone out to look at.  Thank you!

Answer
Let me know,I see no electrical changes when backwashing or filtering. If water is flowing in and out their should be no extra load.It is a single speed pump I presume.Theirs no water leaking to the motor anywhere or the switch. And it NEVER does it any other time.????LYNN
