Subject: pump trips breaker

Question
Hi. I have a 110 volt pond fountain spray pump motor that is operated from a 24 hour timer. System is about 3 years old. With on/off tabs in place, fountain trips the gfci breaker whenever fountain timer shuts it off. However, removing the timer tabs, letting the fountain run 24-7, the fountain never trips off. I've pulled the fountain out of the water and can spin the motor but it doesn't spin too freely (like the sealed bearings may be stiffening up). This makes me think the breaker is functioning properly but the pump is pulling much more amps now, just barely under the breaker's rating. So, when the fountain times off there could be an outrush of current back through the breaker that it can't handle, or what ? Thanks for your time.

Answer
I don't see why their would be a outrush of current when it shuts off.The current would be highest on start, unless  its binding up during run.GFI's will not trip on normal overcurrent situations only faults.[imbalances to ground].I would take the pump apart and clean the impellers, spray with WD, reassemble with a good gasket.Lynn
