Swimming Pool & Spa Construction & Maintenance - DE Filter Problem

Expert: roger - 11/7/2009

Question
I Have a Purex SMBW 4800 DE Filter powered by a 1 1/2 HP Whisperflo
That also ties in to a Purex Triton Mini Max Heater.

Last Month I Started to notice the time between filter grid cleanings was getting shorter. Then last week I cleaned the grids again only to have my pressure return to the max (30psi) about an hour after cleaning it. I tried back washing it and replacing the DE and it did the same thing Right back up to 30 within an hour.
I replaced my grids with new ones, changed every O ring including the barrel gasket on the back wash valve & Checked all control valves for proper position. After getting it all back together
It is still doing the exact same thing. It runs great with good suction & pressure at 15PSI for about 1 hour After that it acts as if my filter is dirty again. The suction goes down and psi shoots up to 30. I don't know what else it could be. My heater also is not working. I would have to guess it is from the reduced flow? But I am not sure.

Can you please help me figure this out? I am really stuck.
Thanks
Mike

Answer
Is there a check valve somewhere in the plumbing like the heater outlet. Here is what you can try. Disconnect the filter outlet to the pool such that heater is bypassed, Now rig up a way to connect your backwash hose to the filter outlet and run it to the pool in place of the returns and try this after you have backwashed and also try using less DE powder. I have had cases where an older check valve wasn't working right. See what you find,
