Swimming Pool & Spa Construction & Maintenance - Pool/spa losing water

Expert: Manish J.Joshi - 6/29/2009

Question
I have a pool/spa combination.  The spa is at a slightly higher level than the pool.  We bought this house just over a month ago, and admit that we are pool rookies, but we have had more than our share of issues with the pool, even after having several experts out to look at it.  After only a week in the home, our filter pump went out.  It was the original, over 25 years old.

We are now having an issue keeping the water in the spa.  It is elevated above the level of the pool and waterfalls into the pool when the filter is running.  Until a few days ago, this was not a problem and the water level stayed reasonable with normal evaporation.  I am not sure if a valve got changed, but unless the filter pump is running, the spa will not stay full now.  It drains down until the level is near the level of the pool, like it is trying to maintain an equilibrium.  Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Answer
When you bought the house was the water overflowing when pump was started and when it was switched off the water level remained at the same level when the pump was closed ?Secondly check whether there is valve in between the spa and pool , which could have been opened by mistake. Can check this and let me know?
