Swimming Pool & Spa Construction & Maintenance - SAND FILTER MEDIA.

Expert: roger - 6/21/2009

Question
Are there any silica sand alternatives that can be purchased through DIY stores, or building merchants?
Any help much appreciated.
Best regards.

Answer
You have to use the sand specified for pools as the size of the granules of silicon must be a certain size or your pool will become a beach. A properly backwashed sand filter can last years between sand changes so from an econmic easy to use point of view the sand filter is the best choice of all filters especially for new pool owners. While the DE is the best for filtering it has a longer learning curve to use and cartridge filters require more maintenance and cartridge changes that can be expensive. There is a product called Zeobrite we once used instead of sand in the sand filter but as it was more expensive we use sand.
