Swimming Pool & Spa Construction & Maintenance - small depris from return jets

Question
I have a new 24" Sta-Rite Crystal Flow Sand Filter and 1HP Hayward Super Pump.  The installer added a layer of rock on the bottom of the filter and then filter sand.  Installer has been in business 20+ years and said they have been installing sand filters this way for years.  Would this cause issues like debris and small ants coming back into pool from jets?  What would cause this?  I notice this most when I manually vacuum small ants off bottom of pool.   I do get a small amount of air in pump pot when I vacuum.  This filter has no manual air bleeder, it is automatic per manufacturer.   Could this be the issue?

Answer
No a broken return line would. You will never have full prime on vacuum especially manual. Why would they use rocks in a sand filter that requires only a specified amount of sand period. If the fingers in your new filter are broken from the rocks have them do it right. I think the rocks are somewhere else. You need to monitor your pool level now daily for leaks. I would demand they install the new filter according to the manufacturers specification I know Starite does not call for rocks in their filters or in their heads.
