Swimming Pool & Spa Construction & Maintenance - Pool Pump Thrusting

Expert: roger - 7/5/2009

Question
Ok, I have an in-ground pool and hot tub sharing the same pump. When we run the hot tub, the pressure in the pump is fine and the water rises all the way to the lid. Yet, when we run the pool, the pressure comes and goes. The water in the pump will make a thrusting noise and get close to the lid, then fall down. It will do this until we turn it off. Only a couple bubbles come out of the return line to the pool. Whats going on?!

  Thanks,Dave

Answer
The path from your skimmer is sucking air as I can't see your plumbing make sure any thread in fiitings to the front of the pump are good most are not. The spa is small requires little suction the pool requires lots. You have a bad connection between skimmer and pump might even be underground have a pressuretest doneif need be.
