Swimming Pool & Spa Construction & Maintenance - hayward superpump installation wiring

Expert: roger - 7/3/2009

Question
roger, i just hAD MY HAYWARD SUPERPUMP FIXED IT WAS MAKING LOUD NOISES AND I HAD IT REBUILT.  WHEN HOOKING THE PUMP WIRES BACK UP I WAS NOT SURE WHICH WIRE WENT WHERE AND I HAVE 2 BLACK WIRES AND ONE WHITE WIRE.  I TRIED EVERY COMBINATION AND THE BEST I CAN GET IS FOR THE PUMP TO KICK ON THEN OFF RIGHT AWAY BECAUSE ITS TRIPPING THE BREAKER IN THE HOUSE.  I RESET IT AND TRY ANOTHER COMBINATION AND IT TRIPS AGAIN.  THE ONLY WIRE I CAN REALLY IDENTIFY IS THE WHITE WIRE.  THE OTHER TWO ARE BLACK.  I ALSO NOTICED THE WIRES HAVE CRACKS IN THEM AS THEY GO BACK INTO THE CONDIUT AND I THINK THEY MAY BE ARCING AND THEN TRIPPING THE BREAKER.  ALSO DOES THE WHITE WIRE GO TO L1 OR L2 OR DOES IT MATTER.

Answer
Before you burn the motor or yourself get a multimeter for testing voltage on AC. With the wires disconnected and hanging in air and the power on measure between the two black wires if its 240 you have L1 and L2. Now measure blacks to white you have 110 thats ground the white wire. If it's a 110v setup measure white to black one and white to black two and the black with 110 is L! or 2 doesn't matter which and the black with no power is neutral making the white ground. Perhaps the electrician was color blind should have used a green ground, a white neutral and a red and black hot. My guess is its 240 volt blacks on L1 and 2 and white on ground. If it's a double GFCI breaker like a dryer it is 240. Last or first resort follow wires back to the breaker. Hope this helps.
