Swimming Pool & Spa Construction & Maintenance/sand from filter in pool

Question
I do I know if a lateral is damaged ?
To replace do I need to empty all the sand and do they fold up ?

Answer
You didn't mention what filter it is at any rate you need to remove all the sand but before you do remove the drain plug on the filter the night before. Now its morning and you have the tedious job of removing wet sand and if its old time for a sand change. Some fingers fold up others unthread. The best way to remove sand is a shop vac we have it down to an art but we do it for a living. The label on the filter specifies how many pounds of sand you need. Please get me the info on your filter.
