Swimming Pool & Spa Construction & Maintenance - Pool pump alarms

Question
QUESTION: I have been all over the Internet trying to find if there really is a pool pump alarm..my issue..my pump shuts off and keeps running but the water is not rushing through..then my pump burns up and I have to replace it..we have replaced it twice at $475 a pop..IS there a pool pump alarm that will go off to notify me when the water is not going through so that my motor in my pump does not burn up again. And if so what is the cost. Thank you

ANSWER: Its odd I never heard off only about 2 pumps in 30 years and then only the 25 dollar impeller the motor doesn't burn up nor the pump housing about a 100 dollar repair someones taken you for a ride.If you keep things out of the water, check hoses and connections I do not think you could have any more bad luck.I do not know of any alarm on the market.Lynn

QUESTION: Okay we just had another pump motor installed.. shouldn't the motor automatically shut off once the water stops pumping through and if not what should we do to correct this issue...because the water will stop running through but the motor keeps running and then it burns up (the motor) (that is why we are looking for a pump alarm to alert us when this happens)we do however always check our hoses..etc. etc. but usually when this issue happens  it's not because we are cleaning the pool it happens on it's own..and it has several times which in turn causes us to replace the motor because it has burned up...Thank you so much Andrea

Answer
Their nothing to shut the motor off it usually only ruins the impeller I guess the impeller could bind and stall the motor though I've never seen it.Are you sure these motors are burned up.I've went on many calls and just personally on my pool A hose busted on the skimmer I only changed the impeller 20 dollars/15 minutes work.I really  can't figure whats happening both to cause it and why the pumps are burning up I'd like to examine these motors.I'm sure theirs a pressure sensor or a flow detector that would shut you down on a no flow situation but I will have to go online to find one as my books do not show one.Lynn
