Swimming Pool & Spa Construction & Maintenance - Diamond Brite

Expert: Drew Waskey - 2/5/2010

Question
My pool was re-surfaced with Diamond Brite (Color: Blue Quartz)about 8 years ago. Within the last year or so, the surface has become pitted and has discoloration and much splotching. I asked the installer, who also has maintained the pool chemistry weekly during the 8 years, and a Diamond Brite rep to examine the pool. Both say this is all normal and the warranty was only for 5 years. Should the pool be having these problems after only 8 years? The Diamond Brite guy said to redo the pool or try a metal free acid solution to the water. What is your opinion. BTW, I live in Orlando and the pool is full year around and sometimes heated in the shoulder months of November, March and April. Thanks.

Answer
Ronald,

Although wear is normal on all pool surfaces, it sounds as though this is excessive.  However, not seeing the surface in person, I can't make a complete determination of the extent of the wear.  The first thing I would do is to take a water sample to a pool store (Leslie's) and have the water tested for all levels-including metals.  Staining of the surface means that there is some foreign matter in the water that is causing it and that is usually metals.  There are a lot of chemicals on the market to handle metal problems and the pool store can help direct you there.  As far as the staining, my favorite product to use is Jack's Magic.  Let me know if I can help in any other way.
