Subject: travel from Zurich to Italy

Question
My husband and I will be in Zurich for 10 days at the end of September.  We
are interested in spending a few days in Italy.  Where would you recommend
that would be with 2 to 3 hrs. of Zurich either by train or car rental?
Also, what about day trips in and around Zurich?  Thanks!

Answer
Hi Judith! Thanks for the inquiry.

The fastest connection to Italy (Zurich - Milan) is the CISalpino train leaving for instance ZH Main Station at 13:09 arriving 3.33 hours later at 16:42. Price for leaving on short notice 2. class CHF 198.00 per person.

but you if you book in advance there is this ticket called SMART that you can buy at any train station either 7 days in advance for CHF 48 each way or 14 days in advance for CHF 32 each way and you get a reserved seat

The tour companies Frantour and Railtour are partners with the Swiss National Railway (sbb) and they can book a package for you at any railway station incl. train, nice hotel, city tour, and a cultural event and this sometimes costs less than the price of a regular train ticket!

Here is the link to the Swiss Rail Travel site http://mct.sbb.ch/mct/en/reisemarkt/services/bahnhofsinfo/reisebuero/reisebuero_...

Please let me know if I can help you further here. The Frantour and Railtour websites are only in German and French

As for travelling inside Switzerland - again the train offers lovely roundtrips from Zurich to the Alps. Have you travelled here before?
here is the website full of info about Switzerland. http://www.myswitzerland.com/en.cfm/destinations

Most everyone goes to the city Lucern (1 hour from ZH) http://www.myswitzerland.com/en.cfm/destinations/resorts/offer-Destinations%5FRe...

and then onto Interlaken where they take the mountain train to and the cable car the famous Jungfraujoch. http://www.interlaken.ch/unterkunft/packages/sommer-ganzes-jahr/interlaken-jungf...

Or they go to Zermatt to see the Matterhorn.
http://www.myswitzerland.com/en.cfm/destinations/resorts/offer-Destinations%5FRe...

From Zermatt you can take the Glacier Express to St. Moritz and back to Zurich http://www.myswitzerland.com/en/offer-Market_Specials-IN-91185.html

Wow I'm getting the travel bug myself just researching for you.

Please let me know how I can help you further.

All the best
