Question
QUESTION: Hi,
I will be in Switzerland for 9 days on the 1st week of December and Im desperate for help/advice on train tickets. My plan is to travel all around Switzerland (especially to see the Alps) and Im on a budget and dont know if its worth buying a Swiss Pass or Half Fare Card or just pay the normal ones - any advice would help greatly!

Thanks,
Andrea

ANSWER: Hello Andrea
So nice to hear from you!

Don't know if you have visited this website but I think there are several possibilities here to save money and see a lot. This first link is the overview, the second link is for the swiss pass. I think that the regular cost of train tickets will certainly be higher ā la carte so to speak, especially if you are travelling over a length of time. You can also book a ticket including a hotel - see for instance the Wilhelm Tell link, I think this looks like a good deal.

There are also daily passes offered by the sbb itself at this site

However if these prices are still out of your budget please let me know and I will see if I can find you any other infos.

QUESTION: Thanks so much for all the information!!Its very helpful!

Im wondering if itīd be best to rent a car, for the 9 days, as the train tickets sound expensive - in your opinion, are the roads good with clear directions if we get a car?
Thanks again so much, very helpful!

ANSWER: Hello Andrea

The roads are great, even when it's snowing and the highways are marked well to get to everywhere. You might need to know a few german words here and there however...

Here is the link for the car rental companies available at the airport. http://www.flughafen-zuerich.ch/ZRH/?ID_site=1&le=2&d=cnt/AWAY/DE/way_mietwagen....

I don't know if it is cheaper to make the rental in the states at a travel agent or book via internet using link above.

Hope this helps, if you need more info, please let me know...

PS did you check out any fly/drive vacation packages on your side?

QUESTION: Thanks for all the info - you are so helpful!
No I have already booked cheap flights to Switzerland from Spain, we are trying to cut costs rather than go for a vacation package. I need to decide between a car rental (found one for 200 euros per week, not bad) or to get a Swiss Pass - what would help decide is if I could find a website that shows all NORMAL train fares (cable cars, etc) in Switzerland, then I can use that information to compare against the Swiss Pass and decide whether that or the car rental is the bestoption. Do you know of any websites? Ive looked everywhere,

Thanks,
Andrea

Answer
Hi Andrea

I'm sure it will all work out for you!

Here is the link to the regular Swiss Rail site SBB which is the official rail company of Switzerland where you can enter each start and destination and get the prices for normal train travel second class.

http://www.sbb.ch/en/index.htm

then this is the link for Swiss Travel Center owned by the SBB and here they have some special offers as well

Hope this helps!

All the best - Judith
