Subject: Stops on Cisalpino
Question QUESTION: Hello-
I am going to be taking the Cisalpino from Zurich to Milan. I wanted to stop at Lugano for a few hours along the way...is this allowed? If you have a ticket for a specific train(I was thinking of getting the non-refundable youth ticket) can you hop off at a stop and get on the next one? If not, is there a way to book the trip to include a stop? Thanks!
P.S. is Lugano worth the stop over for a few hours?
ANSWER: Hello Jed
thanks for the question. I was out of town until now, sorry I could not answer sooner.
I have two or so questions:
where will you be buying this so-called non-refundable youth ticket, in your home country (where is that?) or in Zurich?
is this ticket part of a eurail pass or someother pass?
I'm asking because I never heard of a non-refundable youth ticket.
As far as I know, under normal circumstances you can get off at any stop and get back on as long as the ticket is good for min 24 hours which almost all tickets are.
Also what time of the year are you travelling? Lugano and Como are beautiful in summer, but not so special in winter...
Lugano is certainly one of the loveliest, relaxed places, well-known for its business and university. Pretty panorama looking out over the lake. There is some good but expensive shopping on the via Nassa. Como is also great, real italian feeling of course. Bellinzona is also a stop on the way (one of the trains (ie the one leaving at 12:09)on the timetable stops there too. (see www.sbb.ch available in english)
Hope this info helps. If you need more, just let me know.

QUESTION: Hi Judith-
Thank you so much for your response!
As for your question on the ticket, I found it through the SBB website. The details are as follows:
Passenger 1 Young person (17 - 25)
Route Zürich HB - Milano Centrale
Rate Smart 1 CIS - product offering
Smart 1
* Ticket + Reservation
* vOffer valid up to 14 days prior to departure of trainLimited quota
* Validity period; for the specified day and train only
Refund / exchange
* Refund or exchange not possible
It says valid for that "train only" do you think that means that specific train or any Cisalpino?
I will be traveling in mid-October. Will Lugano/Como not be worth it then? I am not set on Lugano...I really just want to stop in a cute town with great mountain views. Is there a better place you recommend that I can stop at on the way to Milan that has good mountain views? Thanks so much!
Answer Hello Jed...
well to tell you the truth, I think if I were in your shoes I would give the Rail Service a call and ask them that question about having to stay on a specific "train" or being able to get off and on.
their nr. is
0900 300 300 (CHF 1.19/Min, nicht gültig aus dem Ausland)
then there is the other route from zurich to milano that goes over bern - see this link for instance:
http://fahrplan.sbb.ch/bin/query.exe/dn?seqnr=5&ident=07.07112217.1222617628&gui...
this will give you some nice views right from the train and take you past the bernese alps (jungfrau) and down to simplon pass and visp. am not sure if any of the cities along the way will have great mountain views. thun is interesting and spiez as they are also on a lake so the view is more open. domodossola (already italy) is probably the highest up.
have you checked www.myswitzerland.com? you can find out a lot about the individual destinations there.
if you can't get out of the train until milan, i'd probably take the bern-version over the zurich version for the panoramas.
hope this helps
all the best
