Subject: route from Athens to Zurich
Question Hi,
Is it possible to get a train from Athens to Zurich in May?
How long would it take and what route?
Thanks Margaret
Answer Hello Margaret
I could not find any quick and easy solution (outside of flying) for this trip. It is a long one, with stops and changes. Are you familiar with travelling by train/ferry between Greece and Italy?
Here is an answer I found on another travel website which gives you a good idea of a possible train trip between Zurich and Athens, so I assume the other way around is just as time-intensive:
"Feasible, yes..depending on how much time you have..lots of train travel time! You can take the train down to Italy to Bari ... Brindisi..cross over (ferry) to Patras in Greece and take the train to Athens... Quickest on this route would be at least an overnight (or 2) depending on the train schedules coming down from Zurich... with changes in Rome or somewhere else en route.. there are overnight ferries which would bring you to Patras in the morning..the train from Patras is another 3-4 hours, I believe but not sure on that...Bottom line, flights from Zurich to Athens are about 2+ hours..quick and painless..check Swiss and Aegean:)"
I hope this helps. If you need more info about the trains between Italy and Zurich, try www.sbb.ch - this is the national train service for Switzerland and they have everything also in English...
By the way, May is off-season so you may even find cheap airfares between Athens /Zurich.
All the best
Judith
