About Marrissa O`Leary
Expertise
Happy to help with your questions about the business of television. I`ve been a TV Business Affairs, Talent and Comedy executive for over 10 years after starting out as a child actress. I`ve been a VP at two studios, and consulted for others. Because we get so many questions about reality shows, please take a look at the "Previously Answered Questions" first (you'll probably find what you need there!).

Question
Hi Marrissa:

I ran a production business since 1985.. Supplied Betacam crews and editing facilities.. Not well versed in the business side of selling programming... Been away from the biz for 7 years (wife had cancer)
Now going to shoot a (relationship) reality pilot (Clean house style shooting... not huge budget stuff)

As the creator of the show, what can I ask for or expect as compensation?

Also, I've been told by networks over the phone that my ideas are great but I need representation... How in the world can I get an agent to pitch with me. Most agencies say they only take referred clients..  Looking for a REAL agent or entertainment attorney in South Florida..

Thank you!!

Answer
Hi, David.

Thanks for the questions.

What to expect will depend on the nature of the show and where it airs.  I've heard of everything from $500 - $5000 per episode.

In terms of finding representation, I would suggest you start by looking for an attorney as opposed to an agency.  Try the Florida Bar Association to see who specializes in entertainment law and/or intellectual property.  If you contact the Florida local for Screen Actors Guild (bear with me here), they may have contact info for Florida talent agents, who may in turn be able to refer you to agents working with project creators.  There's a California list on the WGA website.

Otherwise, you need to get a trial subscription to IMDBPro and see if you can locate agencies or attorneys through their directories or by looking up the representatives of people who already have projects on the air.

Good luck!
Marrissa
