Question
We live in Southern France near Montpellier.  I would like to receive children's programming in various languages in addition to French and English, which I already have under control.  Specifically, I want Spanish, and if possible, Italian, also.

Do you know if there is children's programming on the free-to-air choices for these languages?  If not, what subscription choices should I consider?  What sort of dish, decoder, and accessories will I need?

Thank you very much.

Liesa Blond

Answer
Hi

Italian is no problem as the main Italian channels RAI 1, 2 and 3, Canale 5, Italia Uno and Rete 4 are all broadcast free except for certain copyright protected progammes, mainly sports and Disney.

My own company can also supply subscriptions to both Italian services, Telepiu and Stream, which both have dedicated children's interest channels.  Both require a dedicated receiver, and have a strong signal requiring no more than a 60 cm dish.

Spanish is more difficult as only TVE International, Canal 24 Horas and TV Andalucia regularly broadcast in the clear.  The two major broadcasters, Canalsatelite Digital (60cm dish on Astra 1) and Via Digital (80cm dish on Hispasat) are difficult to source, but the third broadcaster, Televisa (90cm dish on PAS3R), is quite easy and comprises five channels, although none are dedicated to children's programming solely.  That package does, however, include Galavision.  Televisa will work on any Viaccess 2 receiver.
