TV/VCR/Stereo Troubleshooting/Hitachi 27 inch television

Question
The screen on my television recently started squeezing from top and bottom and ending in the middle of the screen.   What could be the problem.  I have always thought maybe that it could be the picture tube or high frequency capacitor that has gone bad.  Any thoughts.  Thanks for your help.

Answer
This is a vertical circuit problem and is most likely either bad connections or bad caps.  Resolder the connections on the vertical IC.  This should be a small flat IC attached to a heat sink with 9 pins or so.  It may be labeled LA7837 or something similar.  Try resoldering first and update this with your results.  Please also include the model number with the update.
