Question
The cable man has come out to see what the problem was and apparently the inputs aren't working or they would be sending a signal to the cable box. Is this true? Or do you think there may be another problem. I'm a single mom with 3 kids and bedtime is heaven to me so now I am dying without the TV to watch! I took apart the back of the TV tryed to giggle things. The menu button works, and so does input also the volume even though there is no audio. Do you know what the board is called that is connected to the input output plugs? Please let me know I am gonna try to fix it myself because I have no money for someone to come out?

Thanks for your time, Jennifer

Answer
This tv does not send signals back.  But, the cable company may have a tester that sends a test signal to the tv that is supposed to bounce back.  So, his statement could be true under these conditions.

There is more checking you must do before I can guess what may be wrong.  Just remember, this set has over 3,000 electronic components inside not including millions of transistors inside the several Integrated Circuit packages. In addition, these components are broken down into 10 or 12 sections; all with different functions.

So, here are some things you can do, then provide me with answers so I can give you some proper advice.

ONE:  First thing to do is a hard reset.  Do this by unplugging the power cord for 15 minutes. Then try it again. If that does not help, unplug it for 3 hours, minimum and try it again.

TWO: If the reset does not help, using a dvd player or vcr connected into the analog a/v inputs see if you are getting picture and sound from the tape/disc.

THREE:  Check the menu to make sure you are on the cable operation rather than antenna or other input. This set has two antenna inputs; if you are feeding a cable into either one, make sure you have selected the proper one.  (If you use a cable box, tell me which box you are using; make and model).

FOUR:  If you have another tv in the house, bring it to this location and plug it up on the same cable connection to see if it is working (you could have a bad cable box or bad cable line).

FIVE:  If no results, try to concisely give me the symptoms to help me understand what is going on overall.

The concept here is to determine if there is a defect inside the set, menu setup problem, interconnection cable problem or cable box/line problem.  Hitachi sets are quite reliable and often it is a cable problem, not a tv problem.

Then, when you are sure about the symptoms, let me know more. You can email me directly because my allexpert page is maxed out now.  cleggsan#cleggsan.com
