Question
I have a Sony VCR and use it to run cable into an old TV set that is not cable compatible.  It has worked great in the past.  The problem is new for the is machine.  I turn it on and in 5 seconds it will turn itself off.  The result is the same if I use the remote or the switch on the front of the unit.  The clock is on and keeping correct time.  Any ideas?

Answer
Try putting the vcr in record mode and see if it will stay on.

Secondly, do a reset.  This is done by unplugging the power cord of the vcr for 30 minutes, then try it again.

If the above does not help the vcr will need service.  Most likely it is a failing power supply but testing will be necessary to determine for sure.  The repair cost, if you can find someone who will work on it, should be under $100.  However, you can buy new vcr units for $25 and up.

This model is now very old and it is probably not a good investment to spend repair money on it.
