Question
Hi,
I have a Mitsubishi 55-inch projection TV model number VS-55601, manufacture date DEC 1998 PIMS (if PIMS means anything.  It was listed right behind it the date.).  A couple a days ago when pressed the button and turned the TV on, the green light lit up and immediately back off.  The TV did not come on at all.  After trying it a couple more times, I unplugged the TV from the wall and left it alone.  Two days later, I pressed the power button on and the TV stayed on but the picture was very distorted and all of the writing was double-shaded /slanted up to the right.  I would like to repair the TV myself if it is not complicated and also cost effective but the TV manual that came with it has no information on how to troubleshoot/repair this discrepancy.
In need of some help.
Thank you,
Teresa

Answer
The convergence circuit has gone bad. It is NOT and easy repair because it requires a person with soldering skills and the know how to remove/desolder two ICs and solder the new ones in. In addition to that there is often a burnt resistor that must be replaced.

If you have a professional tv tech do the job it will cost around $300 to $400.  If you can do it yourself (or a talented friend) it can be done for around $60 to $100.

The job requires getting the part number from the two convergence IC ships and buying replacements - which cost around $20 to $30 each online.  They are called STK392 parts and I believe your set takes  two STK392-110 or STK392-40 ICs.  You will have to determine by searching for the right number on the ICs in the convergence circuit.  The convergence circuit is indicated by the small markings that are silk screened on the surface of the big board - usually....

Hope this helps you decide the best course of action. Let me know if you need more assistance.
