Expert: cleggsan Date: 7/6/2008 Subject: Screen black but audio works
Question Toshiba 32a61 is 5 years old. Screen went black while wathing cable, sound works, cable menu is visible, and dvd player gets a picture just fine. Any ideas?
Answer Due to the age and the symptoms my suspicion would be the loss of high voltage due to failure of either the flyback transformer or the horizontal output amplifier - or both. This is quite common in older sets. The repair would cost at least $100 for a set this size.
Of course there are other possibilities, such as failure of the video processing circuits. One can only know with investigation by someone capable of taking voltage readings around the circuitry to hunt down the guilty parts.
