Question
We have a Mitsubishi VS-60601 that we purchased in 1998. It has been a fantastic television.  The other we turned it on and there was no picture and all we had was a thumping sound. Please tell me there is hope.  We are reduced to a 21" we can hardly see.

Answer
Ah, remember the days when we thought 21" was a big one?

The thumping sound is a tell tale sign: The power supply has failed in some way and needs looked at.  There may be other failures as well, but the first thing to have looked at is the power supply.

Mitsubishi are fine sets and they are designed to last 12 to 18 years; yours is already 10 years old so you should look at the bang for the buck on repairs.  The repair of the power supply will cost at least $200 and maybe more.  If there is something else going bad that could run the cost up more.

You may get another few years out of the set - and you may not. Experience tells us that once a set fails it is ever more likely to fail again soon after a major repair.

You have a tough decision to make.  Best wishes.
