Question I have a 20 inch sony trinitron which is 10 years old. For the past 6 months the picture is taking longer and longer to come on when I start the tv. At first it was a minute, now it is close to 3 hours. The sound is ok. Is this a major problem? Should I get rid of the tv?
Answer There are several possible causes. The most common would be the flyback transformer and/or the horizontal output transistor. Let me give it a 90% probability it is so. Cost of repair would be more than the set is worth.
With the set so old it would not be professionally ethical to recommend you spend so much to repair it. If you were electronically capable to do the repairs by yourself it would still cost $50 or so for the parts alone.
So, off to the tv store you go!
