Question
I have a 2001 toshiba tv model#36a41 whenever we turn the tv off the little red light stays on and is dim and there is a high pitched buzz. If you unplug the tv for at least 15 min you usually can turn it back on and it works just fine could you tell me what the problem could be? we would like to try to repair it ourselves. thank you

Answer
It may be a faulty IR receiver.  This sits behind the eye where the remote control sends its signal.  It has some sophisticated electronics and is always ON so long as the power cord is plugged in. If not, the remote would not be able to turn the set on.

The fact that you must unplug the power cord to reset the power leads one to think the IR remote receiver is not functioning correctly.

Replacing that module will cost around $100 for a new one. It requires some electronic knowledge and soldering skill to remove the old one and solder in the new one.

You may be able to find this assembly at www.partstore.com or other online places.
