Subject: Car Audio/ popping noise after turning off ignition

Question
I have a 1997 Dodge Intrepid with the following car audio equipment. JVC Arsenal 880 head unit, JL Audio 300/4v2 and JL Audio 500/1v2 amplfiers. JL audio speakers all around and 2 JL 12W3 subs.  I have had this system running smoothly for about 5 months.  Within the last few weeks I have started getting a popping noise in the front 4 speakers approx. 4 seconds after turning the ignition off. All grounds are good on the amps and the head unit.  Where should I begin?  Thanks for you help in advance.

Answer
Are not the 4 front speakers powered by one amplifier?

Describe the sound of the popping noise.  How far apart are the pops and how long do they last?  Does it matter if the volume control of the head unit is up or down when the ignition goes off?  (If the popping noise is not present when the volume control is down then the popping noise is likely coming from the head unit).

If you know how, take the remote power wire off the power amp and connect it manually directly to the battery for manual turn on. If the popping noise is gone under this condition then the popping noise is because the ignition wire which is controlling the remote turn-on is being rapidly interrupted somehow.  Some cars have electronic ignition controls that could cause this.

What I am trying to have you do is isolate the problem as to either coming from the head unit, the car electrical system or within the amplifiers feeding the speakers.

Let me know more after you have experimented around as suggested above.  Don't forget to tell more about the character of the popping noises.
