Subject: RCA 42" 2006 model SDTV

Question
I had no problems at all with the tv, and the other night it just cut itself off. When I tried to turn it back on the power light flashed, but longer than usual and heard a faint beep, but it will not turn on. The power light stays on and nothing - I had to unplug it. Do you think its the picture tube? And does this sound like a pricy fix?? Any advice is greatly appreciated - thank you!

Answer
It has gone into protection mode. This is caused by excessive current somewhere inside the tv.  The faint beep points to the main power supply - but it could be other causes as well.

It is only a couple of years old and should have lots of life left in it.  However, it is an RCA brand and that does not speak too well for it since this brand is not so good for reliability.

The cost of the repair will be over $200 in all probability.  If the main power supply needs major replacement parts it could be much more than $200 I fear.

I suggest you get a couple of opinions from local shops before getting them in to look at it.  Make sure you speak with shops that are certified for RCA repairs.

Any more questions, let me know.
