Question
This TV manufactured in 2003. Suddenly became very dark and difficult to view. Faces turned red, and background is black/undisticktive. Adjustments of the picture controls has not been successful. What might be the problem and is it worth trying to fix.

Answer
You will have to explain in more detail what the picture is doing in order for me to interpret the condition.  I don't understand the term "black/undisticktive".

My guess is the component input has failed. If you are using component inputs to the tv try switching over to S input or composite and see if it clears up.

Secondly, try a hard reset by unplugging the set for 3 or 4 hours. Afterwards, power it up again and see if this problem clears.

Thirdly, it could be a failure of the video drive board.  This would be an expensive repair, for sure.

It is possible you could bring the picture adjustments back to normal viewing by going into the service mode but I hesitate to have you do this because it could ruin the set if you don't follow the instructions very carefully.  But it is worth a try if you dare go into the service mode and try to adjust color balance and brightness or contrast.  You can find the instructions on how to enter the service mode at:

and hit the hotlink down the left hand side of that page.

Wishing you the best; let me hear back for more discussion.
