Subject: Sony Red Line

Question
I have a 46" sony wega kdf-46e2000 rear projection lcd screen TV, lately i have noticed a red line on the top of my tv.  the line is hard to see but on a clear screen or when watching something like golf(sky on top of screen), it is prominent.
a friend said that my guns may not be aligned?  but i looked in the menu to reset or due an auto calibration, but did not see that option.
Your thoughts?  Thank you.

Answer
Yes, Sony tv receivers are not what they used to be.  Their reliability has slipped alot over the years.  Great on design and appearances but not good for maintenance and repairs.

This set does not have any "guns" so tell your friend it is an LCD projector - as you stated.  It has a lamp behind the lcd panel which shines through and lights of the screen.

It could be the lamp, however. Have you checked it?  The owners manual has a detailed procedure on how to check it and replace it.  They are very expensive and you must use the right one.  They cost about $130 for a replacement.

If the projection lamp checks out okey it is likely a problem with the display driver board.  Expect repairs on that to run $300 ish.

Some Sony models have defective light engines and Sony has extended the warranty and will cover the cost of replacement.  But, you must contact Sony about this as a servicing dealer cannot authorize this repair.  Make sure you have model and serial number when you call Sony.

If it turns out to be the engine it will be very, very expensive to repair.

Let me know if there is more to the story.
