Subject: Sound but no video

Question
I live in Malaysia and have an LG Plasma (Model 42PG20R-TA).  My television is fairly new and recently went into a mode where I cannot recieve a vidoe signal.  I've tried using several of the inputs (AV1, AV2, S video, HDMI1&2), but continue to get a floating "no signal" message on the screen.  The sound comes through fine, just no signal.  I've tried a hard boot by unplugging for several hours, but no success.  I currently do not have a cable/satellite feed and only use the set for DVD's.

Answer
Let me make sure I understand the symptoms:

- The audio comes through normally with dvd playing through any of the inputs.
- Video, through the same input, does not produce a picture but the screen prompt comes up "no signal".

QUESTION: Does the screen show any raster lines; that is, if you turn up the brilliance and/or contrast high do you see the raster lines (horizontal sweep lines)? Or any sign of the raster being present?  Do you get any flicker or flash when changing inputs?  Do you get snow or white noise on the screen when tuned to the tv input? If you do have an antenna or rabbit ears can you get any local signal indication?

If there is a raster it means the video engine or drive board has failed.

If there is no raster evidence it means the sweep or display feeding circuits have failed.

In either case, probably, there is a board that has gone bad.

Try the "whack and  smack" routine. Just smack the set with your hand or fist all around a few places on the set. Doing so will often reactivate a loose connection or cold solder joint inside the set. If you get any indications while doing this it is a sign of an intermittent connection.  Finding it is sometimes very difficult.

Let me know more after considering the above suggestions.
