Subject: continuous channel changing

Question
tv is a ge 32" -- went to bed one nite - woke up next morning- turned on tv and it started changing channels - got into the setup mode and it stayed on one channel but did a continuous scroll thru the setup menus - got it out of setup and it started scrolling channels again. unplugged it for a day - took batteries out of the remote - still does the changing thing. any hope for this one - its 8 yrs old - been a good set -- thanks

Answer
It is the controller circuitry. Probably an IC chip gone south or the voltage regulator that is feeding it.  Some testing by a tech who knows what he is doing is necessary to ascertain what has failed.  Repair could be upwards of $100.  Most tv shops will not take in a set this old because support is  no longer available for them.  If it turns out to be a voltage regulator or power supply problem it can be repaired with generic parts, but if the controller IC has gone bad it may be impossible to find a replacement chip.

As a rule any tv of this size over 5 years of age is not worthy of repair; better to put the money towards a new set.

C

PS: Try smacking the set vigorously with your hand or fist; this will often reactivate a loose connection of cold solder joint inside the set.
