TV/VCR/Stereo Troubleshooting - Hitachi Projection TV

Expert: cleggsan - 11/8/2009

Question
QUESTION: I have a Hitachi Ultravision Digital Projection TV.  I think it's 56", but not certain and I don't know the model number.

It goes dark, not black, just dims.  Maybe slightly red hue to the picture.  On rarer occasions, it "scrambles." The only way I can describe it is that it seems like the old horizontal hold problem that you use to see on tube tv's.

Any ideas on what the problem might be?
Thanks,
Steve

ANSWER: Could be any number of ailments.  The dim reddish picture could be weak/old projection tubes or contaminated coolants.  The scramble problem could very well be poor synchronization.  Seems like there are a multitude of possible causes.  If it is a new, DLP technology set you may be facing a video engine problem; if so, the repair is very expensive.

Without the model number I hesitate to go further.  If you want a more precise reply please provide the model number and age of the set.  Thank you.

QUESTION: Thanks for your reponse.

The Model Number is 53UWX10BA.  The TV is approx. 8 yrs old.  It has the 7" guns.

Answer
It depends on the pattern of the picture defects. If you could describe what goes on exactly and the way it varies from turn on to turn off and if it remains constant, fluctuates, etc. and what happens to the sound along the way it would help.  But, if the sound remains constant and the picture shows some distortion of the raster lines then I am confident it is a failure of the convergence system.  This involves replacing the two ICs called STK392-xxx chips and maybe a burnt resistor or two. This repair is usually a $300 to $400 repair bill.  Some shops, if they  are not too busy, will do it for $250 because the ICs are really cheap nowdays since the new flat screen tvs do not use them.  So, shop around and maybe you can get it fixed for the low price.

If there is more, let me know more detail of the symptoms so we can get closer to the specifics.
