TV/VCR/Stereo Troubleshooting - Loss of Sound

Expert: cleggsan - 11/11/2009

Question
The AKAI LCT2785TA will loose sound at variable times for a variable length of time.  Sometimes I must shut off the t.v. and restart it in order to get the sound to recover.  Please advise if this requires an inexpensive part to be replaced.  Thank you.

Answer
It may be of moderate expense.  Without knowing more of the symptoms details my judgment is the sound detector is intermittent in some way; either it is a defective chip or a bad solder joint or a bad voltage regulator in the power supply line that feeds it.  So, there are many possibilities.

It will, however, require some testing by an expert who can understand the electronic circuitry and track down the defective part.  It could be a burnt resistor in the regulator or the sound detector IC chip, etc.

This is not a common symptom and it will require a technician who has experience with this set.  I checked the forums and online discussions and did not find anyone else with this ailment, so it may not be the easiest to solve.

Let me know if there is more.
