TV/VCR/Stereo Troubleshooting - Rca HDTV frozen on vid1 mode

Expert: cleggsan - 11/11/2009

Question
RCA HDTV Model #HD52W59 Purchased in Jan. 2006.

I have been having problems with it freezing after using other components
Connected to it. For example: the only thing we can do is play the Nintendo Wii.
It is locked on vid1 which is the source in which it is connected. It will not even turn off without turning off the surge protector. When we turn it back on all we are able to do is play a game. This has been a progression of about a month. At first it would freeze up but once turned back on we could access the menu to go to our channels. It also was doing it from the DVD source but now we cannot even get to that. It has worked all these years just fine from our off air antennae since we have never had Pay Per View TV. I just thought I’d throw that in even though I know this is not related to the antennae.

At the risk of sounding negative, I sense this is going to be something terminal.

Answer
Here is what I suggest you do. If it doesn't help, come back to me and we will take another stab at it.  Some tvs are programmed internally to automatically stay with the source that is ON and plugged in.  Some sets are programmable at the menu to change its mode of operation.

So here is what you should do.

FIRST:  Get into the on screen menu and see if there are any prompts to change the input selection methods; you might try any of the prompts that look like they might do something to the programming features.

SECOND:  Disconnect the Wii an all other devices such that there are no connections to the tv except for the power cord and the antenna.  Unplug the tv and leave it unplugged for a full one hour.  When you plug it back in push power and volume + buttons at the same time.  See what happens.

You may have to reset some of the options.  You should be able to view tv channels as before.  And, you should be able to switch to the various inputs even though nothing is yet connected.

Let me know if it cures the Video1 auto-selection.
