Expert: Rick Montgomery - 11/7/2009
Question QUESTION: My 1998 Trinitron, KV-27V22, went black. Occasionally when you turn it on, the picture will come on for about 15 secs, then go to a distorted half screen for a few more secs and then black. I have tried to adjust the "screen" screw under the back panel and unplugged over night for a hard reset but this has not worked. I am afraid there is some power issue but I need help to diagnose.
Thanks,
Dave
ANSWER: Dave,
let me begin by thanking you for supplying the model number. I wish every inquiry had it included.
It sounds as though this has a high likelihood of being a quick easy repair IF you have soldering equipment and skills. I have had several of this model in my Service Center for this and similar/related issues. If the Vertical Output IC has not yet been damaged, resoldering it should resolve your problem. The Vertical IC is reference # IC561 in your set. It is a 7 leg IC, and if you look closely at the soldered side, you should see cracked solder joints, or at least small black rings around the joints. This is now a common problem with these 10 + year old sets. It amazes me that most can be repaired with just a new good solder job. To do so, COMPLETELY remove the old solder, and apply fresh new solder to the legs. If the IC has not been damaged, this will repair your set. If it has been damaged, you will need to replace it. The part number is TDA8172, and is available from MCM Electronics at (800)543-4330.
Good luck!
regards,
Rick

QUESTION: Rick,
Thanks for the direction. I did not see any cracked solder joints or black rings around the joints, only a little brownish discolor in that area. I am assuming the IC is bad and going to get one. I'll let you know how it goes.
Dave
Answer Dave,
A word of advice/caution.
IF you have the means, TRY resoldering the IC BEFORE you replace it. As I said, it is one of the more common problems I have seen. Also, If you have the means, check all of the electrolytic capacitors in the vertical circuit. The brownish discoloring you see is from the heat produced by the vertical IC. This is why the solder joints go bad. It is sometimes due to an electrolytic cap changing value.
regards,
Rick
