My Expertise has been in: Video, Audio, RF, Television, and Stereo. I have been in the Television repair business for 25 years and have repaired over 20,000 Televisions in that time. I was a manager of an Information Technology Training Team at The Verizon Advanced Services Group Center, and a Distinguished Member of Technical Staff at Verizon Laboratories. I am now working full time in the TV repair industry until I can find another full time job, I know what your question is: "why don't you just work full time in the TV repair industry permanently?" Well the answer to that is simple, due to the complexity and the DIY craze, TV repair work is at best a good way to make extra money, not to rely on it for your livelihood. A sad truth, but a truth nonetheless.

Question I bought my TV in 1999. It's a Panasonic Model # CT 20614A. It is flickering between a full screen picture and then reduces to about one third of the screen and that's where it settles. So there's a large band of black across the top and bottom of the screen. Sound is fine. I tried to go to the "menu" to see what I could there but the remote won't arrow for me. I'm wondering if it's worth taking somewhere for repair of just getting a new one which I really cannot afford to do. Thank you for your time!
Answer Hello Debbie,
This denotes a vertical deflection problem. The vertical section of your TV is malfunctioning. The possible causes could be:
1) Vertical drive signal decrease in amplitude
2) vertical signal from signal board decrease in amplitude
3) Vertical output amplifier malfunctioning
4) Vertical section of the yoke transformer (shorting)
Any one of these and its associated circuits could cause this problem.
The set has to be examined by a qualified TV technician to determine which one of these scenarios could be the cause of your problem. The problem is not that hard to solve since usually it is number 3 that's the most likely to happen, and the part does not cost that much, so repair is a worth while option, depending on your ability to afford either repair or replacement at this time.
