About Henry A. McKelvey Expertise I have worked in the Electronics field for 25 years, and have been a Telecommunications Expert for 20 years. My Expertise has been in: Video, Audio, RF, Television, and Stereo. I have been in the Television repair business for 25 years and have repaired over 20,000 Televisions in that time. I was a manager of an Information Technology Training Team at The Verizon Advanced Services Group Center, and a Distinguished Member of Technical Staff at Verizon Laboratories. I am now working full time in the TV repair industry until I can find another full time job, I know what your question is: "why don't you just work full time in the TV repair industry permanently?" Well the answer to that is simple, due to the complexity and the DIY craze, TV repair work is at best a good way to make extra money, not to rely on it for your livelihood. A sad truth, but a truth nonetheless.

Question My 8-year-old television shuts itself off after running for an hour or so. If you turn it on, it works for a short while, then shuts off again, getting more and more frequent. Leaving it off for a while makes it run longer. What is wrong and is this an expensive repair? I live in rural area and no one is willing to come to repair and set weighs over 200 pounds. Do I need to get a new set? Many thanks.
Answer Hello George,
This television may have a thermal problem. Basically when the TV heats up it turns off. This is an indication that one or more of the TVs components has become thermally sensitive. A TV Technician would use a cooling agent to cool down select components to determine which one(s) were having the thermal problem. Under normal conditions I would suggest having a TV Technician examine and repair the problem, However under the conditions you have presented, rather then to put you in danger(Trying to work on this TV set without the proper equipment) I am going to suggest that you buy a new TV and donate this one to your local Vocational or Trade school, on the condition that they have to pick it up.
