TV/VCR/Stereo Troubleshooting - muffled sound

Expert: cleggsan - 7/2/2009

Question
Have a 1993 Sony Trinitron TV, picture is still great for standard TV, but the sound is muffled, very muffled, increasing the volume only slightly helps, tried different modes on the audio menu: SAP, MTS, Main, No change in sound, attached external speakers, same thing, no sound, any ideas, I would like to keep the TV because the picture is good

Answer
Model number????

If the set has a headphone output try that.  If it has rca audio outputs try that.  Did you use external amplifier when you tried external speakers?

If you can get good sound from the headphone jack or from the rca outs then I recommend you buy a set of PC speakers at the computer store and hook them up.  That will be cheaper than trying to repair the output amplifier inside the tv.  PC speakers w/subwoofer and good sound are $20 and up.

Let me know if there is more to the story - and be sure to give a model number.
