Subject: Direct TV signal strength

Question
I have an older dish and have recently installed it at another location.  When the dish is aligned, I get a strong singal strength (90 and above) on a few of the transponders but on more of them I get a signal that fluctuates every second anywhere between 0 and 90.  Often it goes from 0 to around 18 to 50 something then 0 then 80... its all over the place.  I've tested the wire with an ohm meter and it seems to be good.  Fine tuning the dish direction does not seem to help - just decreases the max signal strength.  Have you ever seen a signal strength that jumps around like this?  What could the problem be?

Answer
Brandon,

I am not sure what band you are receiving (I take it as probably Ku band) and what type of polarity switching exists on the dish but actually the problem could be polarity related (it's the alignment of the device in the centre of the dish and it's operation). I would suggest to see what effect replacing this device has (it's called LNB or LNBF depending on what you have installe)

Good luck

N George
