TV/VCR/Stereo Troubleshooting/Hitachi 50' tv problems

Question
I have a Hitachi Ultravision 50ux22b, I think it is five to seven years old. I have two problems with my tv. I have noticed that there are about four thin horizontal lines on the bottom of the screen that are discolored. They are barely noticable except when the background is a light color, then it is noticable because the lines are a brownish/orange color. What would cause this and how much would it cost to fix.
Also, I have noticed a big ring on the screen. At first I thought that there just dust in the corners that were not cleaned. The outside part is just a shade darker than the interior. The ring is barely noticable but bothersome. It seems like someone cleaned the inside of the screen but missed the corners. Is that all that it could be & if so, how could I fix it? Thank you for your help

Answer
It may be what you have is some magnetized shadow masks on the projection tubes.  They will need to be degaussed.

There are degaussing coils built into the set and they will gradually demagnetize on their own each time you turn on the set.

However, you must first move any magnetic fields away from the unit.  This is most often caused from loudspeaker systems.

Try that and see what happens.  Let me know if there are other factors that need to be considered.

Thanks for your question.
