Question
Sharp 32" TV, model 32L-S500, manufactured in June, 1999. The following problem happened suddenly without warning. The remote will not perform any functions. The original Sharp remote and my digital cable remote both worked at one time, now neither will perform TV functions. Will not turn on or off, control volume, etc.. Also, front video/audio in terminals will not work. Is there a sensor or fuse that is causing this problem? Is it something that a do it yourselfer could repair? Any assistance or advice would be greatly appreciated. I thank you for your time.

Answer
I found a manual for the 32NS500 but could not find a model as you named it.  Try http://www.sharpusa.com/files/tel_man_32n-s500.pdf and tell me if that is not the right one for your set.

Standard first checks for tv are:

ONE:  Hard reset.  Unplug the power line from the power outlet. Leave it disconnected for 4 hours minimum.  They try again.  ONEA:  Make sure the remote eye is not covered up thus preventing the signal from the remote from getting to the IR receiver inside the set.

TWO:  If reset does not help, then try the whacking routine.  Just bang on the set and the remote with your hand in stratetic places to see if you can restore the function. This detects for loose wires, bad connections, corroded pins in connectors, cold solder joints, etc.

THREE: If the whacking routine does nothing, then it may be an internal circuit failure of the remote receiver.  If so, you will have to send it out or have a tech come in for diagnosis of the problem.

It is strange that the a/v inputs do not work.  How about the ones on the back of the set; do they work?

Let me know the outcome of the above suggestions/questions and I can get some more ideas about what is going on.

Cheers,
