TV/VCR/Stereo Troubleshooting - dvd/vcr combo and dvd player problems

Expert: cleggsan - 4/4/2006

Question
I have an Emerson combo player and a Sony dvd player. I think both might have been hit by a lightning storm. I came home after a short storm and neither combo player or dvd player got any power when I tried them. I unplugged both and let them reset but neither get any power after and hour rest. It's frustrating both are messed up the same way the same time and were in different rooms. I can only assume it was the lightning that did this. My computer had shut off also when I can home. Lucky I had a surge protector on it I guess.

Thanks, Brian

Answer
Brian,

ONE: Check the outlets with a good lamp to verify the socket you are using has power. If not, find the breakers in the house and reset them.

TWO:  DVD players normally are impervious to electrical storms unless the set gets hit directly with lightning.  So, I am doubtful the unit has failed.  What do you mean by not getting any power?  Is there a light on the front panel at all?  If there is it means there is power getting to the set.

THREE:  So, your assignment is to determine what has gone wrong with "power" as in ONE above and once you have verfied power is getting to the line cord what is happening with the set.

If the combo is not turning on even after you know it is getting power, listen for a clicking noise or any kind of indication when the power button on the front panel is depressed.  If there is no indication whatsoever you either still do not have power getting to it or you will need a service tech to troubleshoot it.

Let me know more after you have investigated; then we can take it to the next step.
