This surprises me, the supposed experts are wrong. I'm afraid there IS a rule about having black and red as opposed to red and red etc. This is in place because players used to use bats with anti spin on one side and normal rubber on the other, both of the same color and flip the bat around in play. The opponent - not knowing how to hit the shot back - would more often than not get it wrong and lose the point. Nowadays you have to have one side red and one side black (no other colors are legal) and players are permitted to inspect their opponents bat.
Oh, and by the way Macarious, anti spin is not for smashing, quite the opposite. As it can't generate much spin (because it's made so smooth) it's used to confuse opponents and make a player loop the ball over the end. It makes a lot of players rather angry as you can imagine.
